Online MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and FNP/ENP Admission Requirements
The MSN program prepares nurses for the family nurse practitioner (FNP) role, caring for patients across the lifespan. Graduates obtain educational eligibility for national board certification as a family nurse practitioner (FNP).
Applicants must complete an application via the Nursing Central Application Service (CAS). Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Admission Requirements to FNP or FNP/ENP
- Completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited program. Official transcripts of all undergraduate academic work from each college or institution of higher learning attended.
*Prerequisite course required: Elementary statistics (MTH 123) with a grade of “C” or better.
- GPA: A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). *Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement but whose application contains evidence suggesting strong academic ability may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
- A curriculum vita (CV) or resume.
- A statement of intent outlining the following: 1) qualifications and 2) rationale for applying to the program.
Note:
- Verification of a current, unencumbered RN license and expiration date in the state in which the student is licensed, practices, and will be completing practicum hours.
- Clinical experience: At least 1,000 clinical hours of practice as a Registered Nurse prior to registering for the first practicum course.
Applicants with current certification and licensure as family nurse practitioners (FNPs) may apply for the Emergency Nurse Practitioner certificate only.
Transfer Credits
A maximum of nine (9) semester hours of graduate work completed at other accredited institutions may be applied toward a master’s degree at UMU, provided the student earned a grade of A or B in such courses. Transfer hours from an accredited institution will be considered for acceptance at the time of application/acceptance to the Graduate Program of study. The Nursing Director and/or Program Coordinator will review the course. The transfer course must demonstrate that it meets or exceeds 70% of the content for the learning outcomes identified in the graduate course (through course content, student activities, and assessments in the syllabus). All track-specific didactic and clinical/practicum courses must be taken at the University of Mount Union.

- NUR 502- Advanced Pharmacology 3CR *
- NUR 503- Advanced Health Assessment 3CR
- NUR 504- Healthcare Trends and Issues 3CR
- NUR 505- Research and Evidence-Based Practice 3CR
*Advanced Pharmacology must be taken within five years preceding an APRN National Certification exam, based on individual State Boards of Nursing regulations.
Online ENP Certificate Admission Requirements
The Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) certificate is designed for nurses who desire to work in an urgent care or emergency department setting or are currently working there. Completing the ENP certificate allows educational eligibility for the national certification exam as an ENP.
Applicants must complete an application via the Nursing Central Application Service (CAS). Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
- Completed a FNP degree or certificate from an accredited program. Official transcripts of all graduate academic work from each college or institution of higher learning attended.
- GPA: A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). *Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement but whose application contains evidence suggesting strong academic ability may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
- Verification of a current, unencumbered RN and APRN license and expiration date in the state where the student is licensed, practices, and will be completing practicum hours.
- FNP credentials showing active status should be verified by the certification board (this can be obtained from the AANPCB and ANCC websites).
- A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
MSN FNP and ENP Certificate Accreditation Status
The master’s degree program in nursing at the University of Mount Union is pursuing initial accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org). Applying for accreditation does not guarantee that accreditation will be granted.
Baccalaureate Nursing Program Accreditation
The baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( http://www.ccneaccrediation.org). The program’s last site visit was in November 2020. CCNE granted accreditation to the BSN program at the University of Mount Union for ten years. The next site visit will be in Fall 2030.
The baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) program at the University of Mount Union is fully approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) in accordance with Rule 4723.06 (A)(5), of the Ohio Revised Code for a period of five years effective May 25, 2022.
