Why Mount Union's Physical Therapy Program?
I’ve worked in various healthcare settings throughout my schooling and after graduation. I loved working in the hospital setting with cardiac ICU patients as a Cardiac Exercise Specialist and wanted to expand my scope of practice to be able to care for patients of all diagnoses. Mount Union provided a place that was inclusive and cared about the student as a whole rather than the scores on an application. During the interview process, I felt as if I was talking with friends rather than being interviewed.
Life as a Physical Therapist
I currently work PRN at two hospitals, one in acute care and one in inpatient. I was a tech at an inpatient setting before PT school and fell in love with the setting and wanted to continue that work after graduation. My acute care setting is challenging and keeps my on my toes; you never know what diagnoses you will get for the day. I chose Christus Santa Rosa because of the wonderful management team and community that the therapy team has within itself and the hospital. I chose Methodist Hospital to practice inpatient care because of the community impact they have with their outreach and pro bono work.
Advice for Prospective Physical Therapy Students
Always be open for learning. You will graduate with what will make you a safe clinician, but you have to be willing to make mistakes, take constructive criticism, and learn daily. Be open for new opportunities and be humble! The support and relationships with the faculty in the DPT program made me feel comfortable reaching out for help and establishing good student-to-professor relationships but also colleague-to-colleague relationships.
