Cheer and Dance

The University of Mount Union cheerleading squad, dance team, and mascot support school spirit among athletes, students, and alumni by developing and promoting loyalty to the University of Mount Union. Cheerleaders, dancers, and the mascot interact with the community by attending fundraising events on and off-campus. It is with the expectation that this squad promotes good sportsmanlike conduct during competitive events.

It is an honor and privilege to be a part of the UMU cheerleading squad and dance team. Cheerleaders pride themselves on squad honesty, respect, support, leadership, and ambassadorship for the University of Mount Union. Members of the squad follow the athletic rules conduct code set forth by the NCAA and the University of Mount Union.

  • Events

    Breakfast with Santa

    Saturday, December 12, 2026 | 9 - 11 a.m. | Campus Grounds, Hoover-Price Campus Center

    Join the Cheer and Dance squads for a morning with Santa! Children ages 2+ will cost $20, those under age 2 are free, but still need to register for breakfast. Families with more than one child will pay $20 for the first, and additional children will cost $10. Parents and adult guests are free to attend the event, but if they wish to enjoy breakfast, adult breakfast tickets are $12. All breakfast tickets include one hour for a breakfast of pancakes and bacon, a coloring contest, and a visit with Santa where parents/guests can take photos!

      

    All proceeds with go to the Mount Union Spirit Squads to send the teams to Nationals in Orlando, Florida.

    Cheerleading and Mascot 

    The University of Mount Union welcomes those who will be full-time students to UMU during the 2026-2026 academic year to participate in our cheer and mascot tryouts. All incoming freshmen and transfers are eligible for this tryout. This squad would include the full-year commitment of football, basketball, and competition seasons. Before tryouts, you must email two letters of reccomendation  from coaches, school administration, or studio instructors to spirit squad advisor, Jill Grove at groveji@mountunion.edu. You must show your Mount Union acceptance letter at cheerleading tryouts.  

    If you have not been accepted to the University by Friday, May 9th and your tryout score qualifies your spot on the team, you will be placed on the alternate position until given proof to the coaching staff of your acceptance to Mount Union. If there are any high school conflicts, please notify Jill Grove at groveji@mountunion.edu in advance. Please pre-register online

      

    TRYOUTS

    When: Sunday, April 12th, 2026. Tryouts are 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. followed by a mandatory team meeting from 12 - 1:30 p.m. for uniform fittings and more  for those who have made the 2026-2027 roster.

    Where: McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC), Field House

    What to Wear: Black shorts, plain white t-shirt, and cheer shoes. Hair must be worn in a pony tail. Long, sharp, or artificial nails, and jewelry are prohibited. Bows are optional.

    What to Wear: Fitted plain white t-shirt, black shorts or leggings, tennis shoes, butplease bring jazz shoes or turning shoes. Hair in a pony tail or bun, No jewelry- single stud earrings are acceptable.

  • Clinics and Competitions

    Cheer Stunt Clinic

    Sunday, March 22, 2026 | $50 per participant

    Register by March 9th to receive a clinic t-shirt. Walk-ins are welcome on teh day of the clinic, but will not receive a t-shirt. Open to all 9th-12 grade students and current Mount Union students. Please wear shorts, a fitted shirt (no baggy clothing) and cheer shoes to the clinic, with hair pulled back in a ponytail. If you have long hair, a messy bun or braid is reccomended. Nails must be trimmed down appropriately for safety during stunting instruction, long or artificial nails are not permitted.

    Registration will open at 11:45 a.m., and the clinic will run 12:00 - 4 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC) across from Kehres Stadium.

    College Prep Dance Clinic

    Sunday, March 22, 2026 | $50 per participant

    Registration will open at 11:45 a.m., and the clinic will run 12:00 - 4 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC) across from Kehres Stadium.

    Youth Clinic

    Friday, August 7, 2026 | $35 per participant, $15 for additional participants

    K-5th graders are invited to campus for a Youth Cheer Clinic on Friday August 7 from 1 - 3 p.m. to learn from the Mount Union Spirit Squads! Participants are also invited to walk in the Alliance Carnation Parade on Saturday, August 8, 2026. In order to receive a t-shirt, participants must be registered by July 17, 2026. Registrations and walk-ups will still be accepted after the deadline, but will not receive a t-shirt.

    Cost per participant is $35. If you have more than one child, each additional participant is $15.
