The Path to Teaching
I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't want to be a teacher! As the oldest of nine kids, I had many experiences working with children so it seemed like a perfect fit! Making a difference in the lives of children is my driving force. I have extensively researched effective reading practices and observed some phenomenal teachers here in Stark County. I directly implement those practices into my training of future educators.
Connections with Students
I love seeing my students get excited about working with children. I think my FAVORITE thing is getting an email or text from a teacher candidate or one of our alumni asking for ideas for lessons, help with a particular student need, or just to share something that went well in their own classrooms! We are small enough to truly know our students. I can establish a personal connection with my students that goes beyond just the content in the classroom.
Mount Union's Program
I know many Mount Union alumni who graduated from the Teacher Education Program that are making a HUGE impact on students! A few of those alumni have taught my own children! When looking for a new position, I was drawn to Mount. I knew I wanted to be a part of something special! Our teacher candidates begin working in area classrooms starting in their first year at UMU. They are assigned to various schools in our area so they get hands-on, practical experience working in urban, suburban, and rural school settings.
