A Love for Teaching
Being a professor was my dream job because I love learning and teaching! I always wanted to be a language teacher, which is why I started studying theoretical linguistics and bilingualism. Earning a Ph.D. in Translation Studies provided me with practical insights into how students can learn a foreign language and apply it in their careers. Although I have not yet implemented these ideas in my courses, I believe that advanced language learners should learn how to use machine translation appropriately and responsibly to perform better in a professional setting. My current research objective is to examine how to introduce machine translation into the classroom as a useful tool, rather than as a device for 'cheating.'
Why Mount Union?
[Mount Union is] one of the four colleges or universities in Ohio where a student can major in Japanese. Among them, our Japanese program is particularly appealing because it offers highly individualized classes and a variety of study-abroad destinations. The best part of my job is witnessing my students enjoy learning Japanese or about translation. Because I love learning myself, I want my students to experience that same joy. My goal is to create a learning environment in collaboration with them.
