Why Mount?
I chose Mount because I grew up in Alliance, so I’ve known about it my entire life. My older sister also attends Mount, so it was only right to also continue my education here. Although I live a few minutes from campus, Mount has become a second home because of the many friends I’ve made throughout my involvement while a student here.
Why Criminal Justice?
I chose criminal justice as my major because I think it’s important to know your rights and advocate the things that matter to you. My favorite experiential learning was a poverty simulation. We were put into random groups and received scenarios that impoverished people face every day. I liked it because I think it’s important to know how others live day to day. It was like putting myself in other people’s shoes. This simulation helped me understand how I can help others. However, as for my career goals, I am unsure of what I want to do. Though I do know that I want to help other people and hopefully can do so by working in a hospital.
Overcoming Obstacles
When I started my collegiate career, I was embarrassed to ask for help. I didn’t know where or who to turn to for guidance and advice. So, the biggest obstacle I’ve overcome is learning to ask for help when I need it. A faculty member that helped me and continues to guide me is Dr. Kelly Stout. She understands how unjust the justice system truly is so it’s nice to have someone who understands how I feel.
