Choosing Chemistry
I had the opportunity to begin chemistry research my freshman year, which opened my eyes to what chemistry had to offer. I was able to broaden my learning experience by participating in additional projects beyond my synthetic chemistry research, such as one that utilized coding and computational tools to learn more about metal catalysts. I attribute the skills that I have developed to these rich opportunities and am better prepared for my future academic and career goals. I changed my major from biochemistry to chemistry because I decided to pursue a PhD in organic chemistry. The chemistry major was a better fit for this plan as the wide range of classes it offers better aligns with my future endeavors.
Coming to Mount Union
Originally, I heard about Mount from one of my high school football coaches that's an alumnus, who recommended it to me. I was also impressed with the career outcomes of students in the biochemistry, chemistry, and physics department. The great experience I had visiting campus solidified my decision to attend. The small class sizes allowed me to develop close relationships with the faculty in the biochemistry, chemistry, and physics department. This aspect has enhanced my educational experience by allowing me to further take advantage of opportunities, such as research and office hours. Beyond graduation, the relationships that I built and the mentorship I received will permanently impact me.
Research with Faculty
My research and academic advisor, Dr. Scott Mason, has had the biggest impact on my UMU experience. His extensive knowledge and approach to guiding students has allowed me to become independent and gain confidence in various lab techniques. What I appreciate most about his approach is the trust he has in me to design my own syntheses, allowing me to embrace creativity. Working with Dr. Mason has been especially beneficial as his research relates to my career goals and has allowed me to cultivate skills relevant to them.
