Why Mount Union?
When I was applying to college, I applied for an exchange student scholarship through a program in Peru and got it. I visited campus before making a final decision and instantly fell in love with the campus and the community. As a student, there are many factors that make me feel at home from the faculty and staff to the community. I am welcomed, accepted for who I am, and loved here. During my time at Mount Union, I have come to appreciate Dawn Adams, who has become an important person for me since the first day I arrived; helping me with anything it is I need. Dawn answered silly questions I had over things I did not know when I first arrived and till this day, she is still there when I need her.
Future Surgeon
I chose biology as my major and decided to pair it with neuroscience and chemistry because I want to become a surgeon in the future. Biology not only fit my personality, but I felt that it would help me achieve my goal. Mount Union is preparing me by helping me pick the classes that I need to succeed in medical school and professionally. Even though English is not my first language, Mount Union has allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and engage with people from all over the world who understand me and care about me.
Overcoming Obstacles
An immense obstacle I faced coming to Mount Union was learning a new language and becoming acquainted with the educational system. With time and patience, I understood how Mount worked, and the students and faculty members took time to understand me. An interesting fact about me and another obstacle I faced is that I am the first person in my family that decided to go to another country to persue a dream. Traveling alone may have been scary, especially traveling to a country with a different language, but my desire to succeed in life and obtain a career helped me overcome the fear of being alone.
