Brief Job Description
I am part of the Income Tracking team at Sony Music Publishing, which is the world’s No. 1 music publishing company headquartered in New York with a network of 38 offices across the globe. My role is part of SMP's publishing administration division in Nashville. I primarily oversee the tracking of public performance royalties for the company's talented songwriters, ensuring that song earnings are reported promptly and accurately for our clients. This involves working directly with the U.S. Performing Rights Organizations (ASCAP, BMI SESAC and GMR) on a regular basis, keeping schedules of financial reporting and analysis as well as collection duties where needed.
Why Mount Union?
I was introduced to Mount Union by a wonderful woman and a dear friend, Rachel Boyce Lang. Mrs. Lang, as many know, was a huge supporter of the university and undying in her devotion to its mission and its students. She was a family friend who I had the honor of knowing through her service at First United Methodist Church in East Liverpool (my home church). I fell in love with Mount Union instantly once she suggested I look at the school. In 2006, the Rachel Boyce Lang Foundation established the endowed fund which reinstated Mount Union's international choir tour that now bears her name. She was a very special person and mentor in my life. I will forever be grateful that she guided me towards Mount Union and for her friendship. I love Mount Union because of all the people who touched my life in significant ways during my four years. I firmly believe I would not be where I am today if not for their impact, their friendship and their dedication to making me a better student, a better musician and most importantly a better person.
Performing Opportunities
At Mount Union I had the opportunity to be part of so many vocal and instrumental ensembles. They allowed me unlimited access to further develop myself as a well-rounded musician. Working on the business side of the music industry, it's important to have an understanding of the creative artists and songwriters who are our clients. Relating to them, respecting their artistry and possessing the passion to be a dedicated caretaker of their life's work are all qualities that set industry professionals apart from the rest. All of those things began for me at Mount Union.
Staying Connected
I've attended Alumni Weekends every so often, keep tabs on Mount union via social media and enjoy, like so many others, following the football team every fall/winter. Two years ago there was a Nashville get-together for alums and it was a fantastic night.
Unique Career
I love the fact that I get to be a caretaker and steward of the catalogs of so many successful songwriters from all over the world. I am energetic and excited for every day of work because of the inner passion I have for them. I hope to be able to influence the Nashville music community and the larger music business as a whole by my example. The songwriters and artists are our focus. They and their craft, above all else, should drive our daily decision making. Serving them is a high calling and it's one I take very seriously.
