Switching Majors to Find a Passion
I started college as an education and intervention major because I wanted to help others. However, as I explored different paths, I realized I was more interested in human resource management and marketing. I enjoy working with people, problem-solving, and being creative, which made these fields a better fit. Switching to HR and marketing has allowed me to develop my skills in leadership, organization, and communication while preparing for a career where I can make a positive impact. Switching majors has also been the biggest obstacle I've had to overcome because it meant stepping into something unfamiliar and adjusting my plans for the future. However, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Experiences Extending beyond the Classroom
I’ve had incredible experiential learning opportunities through internships, service trips, and hands-on experiences. My internship with First Tee Greater Akron strengthened my leadership and communication skills, and I’m excited for my upcoming summer internship with Sherwin-Williams to gain corporate and marketing experience. The wilderness trip pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to be resilient and work with a team. Traveling to Disney with the cheer team was a fun and a memorable bonding experience. This year, I look forward to volunteering at Give Kids the World, making a positive impact on children with critical illnesses. Each of these experiences has helped me grow, build connections, and prepare for my future.
Advice to Prospective Students
My advice to high school students looking at colleges and universities is to find a place where you can grow beyond an academic program. Look for a school that offers opportunities to get involved, build connections, and develop both personal and professional skills. Visit campuses, talk to current students, and trust your instincts about where you feel most at home. College is more than just earning a degree—it’s about finding a supportive community that helps you become the best version of yourself.
