Choosing Mount Union
I was looking for a small school and when I toured Mount Union, it just felt like the right place to spend my next 4 years with its strong academic program and endless opportunities for student involvement on campus. Throughout my time at Mount Union, I've interacted with amazing faculty and staff members who make Mount Union feel like home along with my friends. For high school students looking at colleges and universities, enjoy the process of touring colleges and universities. It may be stressful, but ultimately it will all work out.
Why Biochemistry?
I started as a biochemistry major because of my interest in chemistry and the major meeting the pre-medicine pre-requisites. I have recently added a biology major (initially my minor) since I had enough credits from biology courses at Mount Union and high school to complete the major. Mount Union is helping me accomplish my academic goals by giving me hands-on opportunities.
Extraordinary Experience
This summer I had the opportunity to work at Cincinnati Children's Hospital through their Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. I worked 40 hours a week for nine weeks under the mentorship of Dr. Nurit Azouz learning about immunology and allergies in a laboratory. I conducted research on how the mechanism of proton pump inhibitors works to induce disease remission in Eosinophilic Esophagitis. I received honorable mention at the Capstone Poster Symposium as my project was in the top 20% upon culminating my participation in the SURF Program. I could not have accomplished this goal without Dr. Keith Miller's help and guidance; he has helped me meet every goal I set for myself throughout college.
