ALLIANCE — The University of Mount Union’s Green Raiders announced its sustainability award recipients for 2019-2020 in Dr. Sheryl (Ames ’90) Mason, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, Dianne Hoover, housekeeper and Emily Keller ’20, an environmental science graduate of Aurora, Ohio.

Every year, one faculty member, staff member and student are selected by the Sustainability Management Advisory Council based on nominations from members of the campus community.

Mason’s nominator said, “Sheryl brings a sustainability mindset to the science camp that she runs each summer on campus. Not only does the camp improve education for local youngsters, it also improves the sustainability of the community and the campus by bringing more people to campus to learn about UMU as a whole and about green science.”

Hoover, who maintains Bracy Hall of Science, is the mother of Megan Hoover ’20, a biology graduate of Salem, Ohio. Her nominator said, “What makes Dianne stand out is that she not only does her ‘normal’ job duties so well, but she goes above and beyond to enhance the University, especially when it comes to sustainability.” 

Keller, currently working on her own business, Watering Hole Hydroponics, was a Green Raider during her time as an undergraduate. She was one of the first graduates to earn a minor in sustainability and attended the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Conference during her tenure at Mount Union. One nominator said, “She took additional leadership roles in the lobbying itself when she met with representatives over telephone conference call. While many students drifted away or did not fully engage with Virtual Lobby Weekend, Emily stepped up and showed herself to be a role model.”
