"I immediately felt like I was a part of the family, which excited me for the coming week,” said Metzler.

Upon arriving in San Cristobal, students were able to meet church members with whom they would work throughout the week and tour the city where many of the work sites were located. Students began building relationships with the community despite their language barrier.

“The community was so excited for our visit, and we were constantly reminded of the great work that we were doing even by being present and willing to give back,” said Metzler. “Between teaching them (students) English and improving my Spanish through our interactions, I enjoyed building connections with the kids and learning more about them.”

Metzler added that building a bathroom and patio area for a recent widow impacted her experience in San Cristobal because the woman was happy to see people helping her by working on her home.

“Even if we were not working on a project, our company would have been enough to make her smile, which made me feel so fulfilled,” said Metzler.

Metzler, who is preparing to graduate this semester, explained that she plans to enter higher education as a professional. Traveling abroad to provide service to others confirmed that Metzler’s desired career is the right one.

“I am planning to attend graduate school to pursue a career in higher education, specifically in student affairs upon graduation,” said Metzler. “This experience rejuvenated my service mindset and further cemented my desire to give back to others; working with the kids and building relationships made me even more excited for my career path!”

The social responsibility class is offered every spring semester to every student, regardless of their major. The course was designed to teach students about being socially responsible and the differences and similarities between cultures. Learn more on Mount Union's study abroad program.
