ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union’s Sustainability Management Advisory Council is proud to announce Dr. Hans Tritico, associate professor of civil engineering, Bonnie Twaddle, community outreach coordinator at the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center and student Alejandra Twiss ’21, a French and geology double major of Louisville, Ohio, as its 2021 Green Raider Award recipients.

The Green Raider Awards are presented annually to a faculty member, staff member and a student who showcase a strong awareness of sustainability through their dedication to promoting the principles of social, financial and environmental responsibility both to the University and Alliance community. 

“Dr. Tritico has had a long involvement with engineering in ways that protect the environment,” one nomination for Tritico stated. “He includes specific references to environmental issues and engineering solutions in his civil engineering classes, and he has led groups of students to other countries to apply their knowledge in environmentally sustainable ways.”

Regarding Twaddle, one nominator said, “Her educational efforts always promote sustainable practices, whether through the Children's Gardening program or guest speaking in a First-Year Seminar class. She has been involved with composting food wastes, establishing the Pollinator Mound on campus, training Nature Center volunteers in sustainable practices, and planting native plants that support our native pollinators (as well as maintaining our non-native honeybees).”

Twiss, who has been a Green Raider on campus for three years, also received glowing nominations.

“Alejandra has actively participated in Freshman Orientation, Campus Sustainability Tours, Game Day Recycling Challenge, RecycleMania and many other Green Raider special programs,” one nomination said. “She has led Trail Clean-ups and recently was selected to participate in the Summer Brumbaugh Scholars program - conducting research regarding organic agriculture.  Alejandra definitely has a passion for sustainability and works to promote sustainable living both on and off campus.” 

A Burgundy Belle maple tree was planted in honor of the recipients at the April 27 ceremony in front of Hoiles-Peterson Hall.
