ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union’s Sustainability Management Advisory Council (SMAC) is proud to announce Dr. Chris Stanton, professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and director of the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, Jamie Greiner, sustainability and campus outreach manager from 2015 through fall of 2021 and alumna Hayley Maher ’22, an exercise science graduate of Greenville, Ohio, as its 2022 Green Raider Award recipients.

The Green Raider Awards are presented annually to a faculty member, staff member and a student who showcase a strong awareness of sustainability through their dedication to promoting the principles of social, financial and environmental responsibility both to the University and Alliance community. 

Regarding Stanton, one nominator said, “Dr. Stanton has taken the lead on the Green Raiders and has dedicated a lot of his own time and effort to helping make the club run smoothly and we continue to work on sustainability projects throughout campus.”

“Jamie worked for many years to build the sustainability initiatives that we know on campus today,” one nominator of Greiner said. “She has been a role model for many students, including myself, and she was constantly encouraging and supportive to her students.”

Maher, who has been a Green Raider on campus for three years, also received glowing nominations.

“Hayley is more active within the sustainability practices of Mount Union than anybody I know, by far,” one nomination for Maher stated. “It is a great passion of hers. She never hesitates to get involved in events, as well as lead them—sometimes with a moment’s notice. She has used her passion for sustainability to actively engage the campus and community alike.”

In honor of the award recipients, Physical Plant planted a Yellow Poplar, or Tulip Tree, next to the Kolenbrander-Harter Information Center. This species is native to North America and can grow 80 to 100 feet in height.
