Mount Union Engineering Organization Named Best Student Chapter in America

October 29, 2025

CATONSVILLE, Maryland — In recognition of quantity and quality of the activities and programs implemented by a chapter during a calendar year, the International Electrical and Electronics (IEEE) Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) named the University of Mount Union’s student chapter as the best of its kind in the nation for 2025.

According to its website, the IEEE MTT-S Outstanding Chapter Award is given annually to a maximum of 5% of the MTT-S chapters worldwide. Only five student chapters were selected across the world, with Mount Union winning alongside institutions in Brazil, India and Tunisia.

“For a smaller university like Mount Union, this recognition shows that even a new and relatively small chapter can compete on the international stage if there’s strong teamwork, passion, and creative outreach,” said Dr. Glauco Fontgalland, associate professor of computer and electrical engineering at Mount Union. “Winning this award validates our commitment to fostering real-world learning and student innovation. It’s not just about Mount Union—it’s about showing how small programs can produce globally recognized impact when students take initiative.”

Mount Union’s IEEE MTT-S chapter focused on building a community around hands-on RF and microwave learning. The group organized technical workshops on antennas and microwave measurements, ran outreach sessions connecting undergraduates with IEEE mentors and promoted cross-disciplinary collaboration with other societies like EMC and AP-S.
