New Student Organizations Bring Fresh Opportunities to Mount Union

October 28, 2025

By Grace Kanipe '26

The University of Mount Union is buzzing with energy this semester as four new student organizations make their mark on campus. From public speaking to physics, technology to wellness, these groups are already creating spaces for students to learn, grow, and connect.

Toastmasters International

This world-renowned organization is known for helping people grow their confidence and skills in public speaking, leadership, and communication—qualities that are recognized by employers across countless industries.

The campus chapter was founded by Alexus Hardy, a double major in marketing and public relations, who believed Mount Union could benefit from the same opportunities she saw on a global scale. “It was a long but rewarding process to bring Toastmasters here,” Hardy said. “I wanted to create something that would benefit not only business students but also teachers, nurses, communication majors, and anyone looking to strengthen their confidence and professional presence.”

The club has already made a powerful impact, helping members like Hardy and others prepare for success in careers where strong communication is essential. By joining, students become part of a global network that lasts far beyond graduation.

Women in Physics (WiP)

Founded last spring by Rell Smith, a double major in biomedical engineering and French, the Women in Physics club (WiP) is dedicated to expanding and highlighting Mount Union’s physics program while encouraging the engagement of female and gender minorities in the field. “We’re always looking for new members and new ideas,” members shared, noting that no prior physics experience is required. The club recently received a $1,000 grant from the American Physics Society (APS) to support its mission.

WiP has already hosted a guest speaker—a Ph.D. candidate in polymer engineering—who shared insights about graduate school and shifting academic careers into specialized programs. The club also participated in the campus STEMOlympics, a weeklong competition among STEM clubs. Looking ahead, WiP is planning more guest speakers, a joint quantum computing workshop, and sending members to the annual APS conference in October.

WiP meets biweekly on Thursdays during UMT in the Intro Physics Lab (Bracy Room 142).

WIFI

This semester also marks the launch of Women Inspiring Future Innovation a new group aimed at supporting women and their allies in technology fields. Advised by Dr. Julie Butler, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, and founded by Emily Owens, WIFI offers networking opportunities, presentations, skills sessions, coding hours, and social events.

The organization is open to anyone interested in tech or tech-adjacent fields—computer science, data science, computer engineering, artificial intelligence, math, and more. Whether you’re just starting your tech journey or preparing to graduate, WIFI is a place to meet peers, develop skills, and grow academically and professionally.

AWARE

Another newcomer to campus is AWARE, established in Spring 2025 by Mattalyn Kiser. The group’s mission is to bring awareness to addiction and its warning signs while working to break the stigma surrounding it. “Addiction is a very real thing that can affect anyone,” members emphasized. “It’s okay to not be okay, and it should not be embarrassing to ask for help.”

In its short time on campus, AWARE has already made an impact by installing naloxone boxes throughout campus spaces, a tangible step toward supporting the Mount Union community. With growing membership, AWARE plans to be highly involved on campus in the coming year. Meetings are held biweekly, with exact days determined based on member availability.

Get Involved

Each of these new organizations represents a different way for Mount Union students to build community, develop new skills, and make a difference. Whether you’re interested in public speaking, physics, tech, or wellness, there’s a place find your people and grow.
