Mount Union Baja SAE Racing Team Bests All Ohio Competition in September Race

October 15, 2026

NASHPORT, Ohio — Demonstrating their resilience and engineering skills, the University of Mount Union Raider Racing Baja SAE team finished as the best team in Ohio in the four-hour endurance race at the September Baja SAE Ohio race.

The team placed 14th out of 70 teams and was the top finisher among all 11 Ohio institutions for the endurance race, which tests the student-built cars on an offroad track to see who can complete the most laps during those four hours. The Raider Racing team was also among the best in Ohio in terms of their vehicle's acceleration.

These results continued the team's success, as they were the second-best team from Ohio and 13th overall among 86 teams competing in the Baja SAE New York race in June.

“[Ohio] was the fifth race I’ve attended and it was by far the smoothest our team has operated at a race,” said Cooper Timmons ’27, a mechanical engineering and mathematics major from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. “Having joined the club when there were only two other members, the progress and achievements that we have managed to make in the last four years are really awesome to see. We went from barely being able to compete to beating some of the best engineering schools in the country, with a design that could be made even better.”

“The easiest way to explain the endurance race is that it is a constant dopamine rush,” said Harrison Rothschild ’28, a biomedical engineering major from Copley, Ohio. “Baja has been an enriching experience for me throughout my three years in the club so far. I have learned and grown so much in my skills as an engineer, a teammate and a leader.”

Members of the Raider Racing team develop hard and soft skills, as they not only learn the technical aspects of the car and its components, but also hone communication skills as a team to both succeed in the race and the business plans they present as part of the competition.

“Baja provides me with hands-on learning where I can apply what I learn to a real project,” said Carter Spangler ’27, a mechanical engineering major from North Canton, Ohio. “The race is a learning experience where you have to fix problems on the fly.”
